“Kathaumixw” (pronounced Ka-thou-mew) is from the Coast Salish language meaning “A gathering together of different peoples”. Founded in 1984 by Don James, (Music Director of the Powell River Academy of Music) and Dal Matterson (Chairman of the Kathaumixw Festival), the competition is held biennially at the seaside town of Powell River in Canada. It is a five-day choral festival filled with concerts, choral and vocal solo competitions in addition to conductor’s seminars. Amateur soloists and choirs of all ages from around the world are welcomed to participate and share their love of music. Contestants can perform works from the classical repertoire, contemporary works or traditional folk music. The jury comprises internationally established conductors, soloists and composers. First prize winners will perform in the Kathaumixw Awards concert.
