Founded in the 1930s, the Festival is held annually on the Tanglewood estate, located in the town of Lenox, Massachusetts. With an extensive programme across various musical genres, including classical and chamber, it has been a showcase for internationally acclaimed artists and performers.
In the 2010 edition, the event’s residing group, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, will feature many renowned musicians and conductors. These include maestro Kurt Masur, directing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9; pianist Kirill Gerstein, presenting Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, under the baton of Charles Dutoit; the Swiss conductor will also be on stage with Yo-Yo Ma, performing Cello Concerto in E minor Op. 85 by Elgar; Emanuel Ax will deliver Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major, conducted by David Zinman; American pianist Richard Goode will play Piano Concerto No. 14 in E-flat major by Mozart, with Christoph von Dohnányi on the podium; Jean-Yves Thibaudet will interpret Piano Concerto in F by Gershwin; violinist Hilary Hahn will bring to the audience Sibelius’ Violin Concerto in D minor Op. 47; Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major will be presented by Pinchas Zukerman; and Joshua Bell will team up with pianist Jeremy Denk, to perform Double Concerto in D minor by Mendelssohn. British cellist Steven Isserlis will be on stage with Australian Chamber Orchestra, to deliver Schumann’s Cello Concerto in A minor. In the recital of Pieter Wispelwey, the complete Suites for Solo Cello by J. S. Bach will be played. The Emerson String Quartet will be joined by clarinetist David Shifrin, to interpret Clarinet Quintet in A major K. 581 by Mozart. The spotlight will also be on Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Garrick Ohlsson, Gil Shaham, Lynn Harrell, Dawn Upshaw, Oliver Knussen, James Levine, Silk Road Ensemble, and many others.
