Established in 1904, the Festival is held annually in Ravinia Park, located in the city of Holland Park, Illinois. Being the oldest outdoor music festival in the United States, with an extensive programme across various genres, including classical music and opera, it has been a showcase for internationally acclaimed artists and performers.
The 2010 edition will open with Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, played by Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii, gold medalist of 2009 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of James Conlon, will feature many renowned musicians. These include Garrick Ohlsson, performing Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor by Chopin; Jorge Federico Osorio, to deliver Beethoven’s complete Piano Concertos; Denis Matsuev, interpreting Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor; violinist Joshua Bell, to present Violin Concerto in E minor by Mendelssohn; Pinchas Zukerman, playing Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor; and soprano Renée Fleming, bringing to the audience Four Last Songs by Richard Strauss. Two operas by Mozart, Così fan tutte, and The Marriage of Figaro, will be staged in celebration of James Conlon’s 60th birthday. A number of recitals will also be delivered by various instrumentalists and groups, including Leon Fleisher, Vladimir Feltsman, Chinese violinist Tianwa Yang, Midori, Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, Emerson String Quartet, and many others.
