Under Philippe Herreweghe’ baton, the 2011 event opens with Bach’s Mass in B Minor, featuring a collaboration of Collegium Vocale Gent and vocalists such as soprano Dorothee Mields and counter-tenor Damien Guillon. Counter-tenor Robin Blaze will team up with Theatre of the Ayre to perform works by Schütz, Buxtenhude, Kreiger and more lesser-known vocal repertoires. Hille Perl, Lee Santana and Patrick Ayrton will be performing period instruments viola da gamba, theorbo and harpsichord on a programme full of chamber works by J.S.Bach. Gustav Leonhardt will perform us a recital of German harpsichord repertoires covering works by J.S.Bach, Bohm, Buxtenhude, Reincken and Weckmann. James O’Donnell will lead The Choir of Westminster Abby and St. James’s Baroque to perform Biber’s Requiem in A major. The spotlight will also be on Mahan Esfahani, The English Concert, Enrico Gatti, Fabio Clofini, Ensemble Caprice, Retrospect Ensemble and more.
Besides recitals, the festival also invites Laurence Dreyfus, Professor of Music at Oxford University, to talk about J.S.Bach’s reception as a revolutionist back in the 18th centuries.
