Following the theatre’s grandeur opening back in 2008, the festival has aimed at providing professional opera performances of world-class quality. Apart from a selection of classical repertoires, the festival has also featured new commissioned works by local artists as promote the diverse ethnic music of the country.
The 2011 edition features a wide variety of classical and modern operatic repertoires. Bizet’s Carmen will be directed by Francesca Zambello, with Hungarian soprano Viktoria Vizin as Carmen, American tenor Brandon Jovanovich as Don José, baritone Michael Todd Simpson as Escamillo and Belgian soprano Anne-Catherine Gillet as Micaëla . Directed by Gian-Carlo de Monaco, Puccini’s Tosca will be brought on stage by soloists Nicola Beller Carbone (as Tosca), Aquiles Machado (as Cavaradossi) and more. Gianni Schicchi on the other hand, will feature baritone Brian Montgomery as Schicchi and Bixia Wu as Lauretta. Other highlights include the many commissioned operatic works by Chinese composers.
