Established since 1998, the Beijing Music Festival is one of the major annual cultural highlights in the Chinese capital dedicated to presenting high-quality classical music performances, commissioning new works, advocating music education for the general public. The festival is prestigious for its diverse programmes covering symphonies, chamber music, solo, choral music and jazz, showcasing renowned musicians from around the globe. Besides a series of concert highlights, the event also features community outreach programmes including pre-concert talks, and master classes.
In 2011, the festival commemorates the centennial of the death of Gustav Mahler by featuring 18 of the composer’s complete works performed by Anne Sofie von Otter, Sumi Jo, Marianna Tarasova under the baton of Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, Yuri Temirkanov, Daniel Harding, and Riccardo Muti.
