Named after Franz Liszt’s last major student, Vianna da Motta, the competition was first launched in 1957 by pianist, Sequeira Costa, himself a student of Vianna da Motta. Recently held triennially in Lisbon, it has been a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions since 1966. The first prize winner will be given opportunity to perform in concerts with the Gulbenkian Orchestra, and other major festivals in Portugal. The founder and president, Sequeira Costa, will head the jury. Renowned pianists, Vladimir Krainev, Nelson Freire and Emanuel Ax are former prize winners.
