The competition was founded in 1949 by Cesare Nordio in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the death of the virtuoso pianist and composer, Ferruccio Busoni. It is held biennially in Bolzano, northern Italy, a place considered as a crossroads after World War II where Italian and German cultures meet and stimulate contrasts to one another. International pianists under the age of 30 can participate in this prestigious competition. Past jury includes Claudio Arrau, Wilhelm Backhaus and Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli to name a few. 24 candidates will be chosen from the preliminary selection in the first year of the competition and perform a completely new set of repertoire in the final round in the next year. Former prize winners include Martha Argerich, Louis Lorties and Alexander Kobrin.
