First established in 1937 as the Eugène Ysaÿe Competition, the event was strongly supported by Queen Elisabeth of Belgium and the celebrated Belgian violinist and composer. Since its foundation, the event is considered to be one of the most prestigious and demanding music competitions in the world. Featuring four disciplines including the violin (since 1951), the piano (since 1952), composition (since 1953) and singing (since 1988), two categories are held in turns annually.
The 2012 edition sets its two disciplines in music composition and the violin. This year, the Violin Competition will mark the event’s 75th anniversary, featuring finalists performing with the National Orchestra of Belgium under the baton of Gilbert Varga. The winning composition will become the compulsory repertoire for the final of next edition- the Piano 2013 Competition. The international jury panel includes Arie Van Lysebeth (Chairman),Kris Defoort, Kimmo Hakola, Toshio Hosokawa and Jörg Widmann.
