Founded in 1954 by pianist Maria Canals and her husband, writer Rossend Llates, the competition has gained international prestige shortly after its reception in Barcelona. With Queen Sofia of Spain as President of Honour, the event is held at the Palau de la Música in Barcelona, featuring piano, violin, singing, cello, chamber music, guitar, percussion and flute disciplines.
