Established in 1986, the biennial competition has been held in Bilbao, a city located in northern Spain and famous for its museums and churches. Contestants will be selected according to their performance in the DVD recording submitted for the preliminary. Chosen candidates will perform operatic arias designated by the jury in the semi-final, and in the final, they will be accompanied by the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra. Past winners include Ernesto Grisales, Marcin Bronikowski, Iride Martínez and Micaela Carosi. The jury is chaired by the renowned Italian tenor, Giuseppe Giaccomini; Pietro Ballo, María Bravo, Carlo Colombara and Paulo Abrao Esper will be the members.
