Named after the Greek pianist, the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition was first hosted by Brigham Young University as part of a summer piano festival in 1976. In 1980, the competition was relocated to Salt Lake City under the patronage of the Utah Symphony. A four year cycle for contestants of different age group was set in 1995; this year is for pianists aged from 19 to 32. There are no limitations of repertoire giving the contestants full opportunity to display their talents and virtuosity through their own choice. Six finalists will perform with the Utah Symphony in two nights of concerts. The jury is chaired by American pianist, Nelita True. Chinese pianist, Bao Huiqiao, is one of the members.
