Organised every year by the Società del Quartetto since 1950, the event is one of the most ancient and prestigious competitions of its kind in Europe. Alternating every other year between the disciplines of opera singing and the piano, the competition is addressed to young artists who aspire to start up an international music career. Held in the historical city of Vercelli in northern Italy, where the world’s first public university was established, it is under the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic. Previous winners include, for the piano competition, Daniel Baremboim, Claudio Abbado, Pavel Gililov, Angela Hewitt, Jean Yves Thibaudet, and for the opera singing, Leo Nucci, Giuseppe Giacomini, Luciano Pavarotti, and Sumi Jo.
