Founded in 1960s, the Francisco Tárrega International Guitar Competition is currently one of the largest and most important guitar competitions in the world. It is held annually in Benicassim, a tourist city in the province of Castelló embracing a beach resort on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The competition aims at promoting the works for guitar, in especially those composed by Francisco Tárrega. International guitarists under 32 years of age can participate and perform their chosen guitar repertoire. In addition to prize money, winners also get a CD recording opportunity as well as several concert performances. Previous prize winners include David Russell and Kevin R. Gallagher.
