Organized by the Bavarian Broadcasting, the competition first took place in 1952. It is held annually in Munich, the capital city of Bavaria and a major European cultural centre. It is now ranked as the largest competition for classical music world wide. Each year, it tests the mettle of the contestants in four different categories. Young musicians between the age of 18 and 30 are eligible to take part and perform in front of a jury comprising top representatives of the corresponding music fields in the world such as Urban Agnas, Ewa Kupiec and Sir Simon Preston. All rounds of the competition as well as the closing prize winner’s concerts will be broadcasted through BR-Klassik. Previous prize winners include Anne Sofie von Otter, Jessye Norman and Sol Gabetta.
