The Massenet Festival was firstly held in November 1990 with five events including the oratorio La Vierge and the opera Cléopâtre. A biennale held at Saint-Étienne, close to Jules Massenet’s birthplace, the major aim of the festival is to rediscover missing or forgotten Massenet scores. The best-known Massenet opera, Manon, will be presented in the 2009 festival. An international symposium will be held based on figures from the antiquity of French opera.
