Dr. Michele Pittaluga, musicologist and music lover, created the annual competition in 1968 to mark the 800th anniversary of the foundation of Alessandria, a city located in northwestern Italy. He aims at spreading knowledge of the guitar repertoire, promoting and supporting new talents. The winner will be offered concerts in Rome, Venice, Milan and other Italian cities. Past winners include Stefano Grondona, Leonardo de Angelis, Elena Papandreou, George Vassilev and Andras Csàki, just to name a few.

Founded in 1939 by Swiss composer, Henri Gagnebin and Frédéric Liebstoeckl, the competition has taken place in Geneva annually. Discipline alters every year, the 2010 edition is devoted to piano and oboe. It aims to promote contemporary music, especially Swiss compositions. Past winners include famous pianists Jean-Paul Sévilla, Martha Argerich, Robert Alexander Bohnke, Arturo Benedetti-Michelangeli and Georg Solti, oboists Alex Klein, Heinz Holliger and Edgar Shann.

The Association Amici della Musica “Salvador Gandino” created the annual competition in 1990 in Porcia, located in northeastern Italy. It aims to promote classical brass music and this year it welcomes trumpet players from all over the world. The repertoire includes works by Telemann, Mozart, Brandt and other composers. No more than five contestants will be selected for the final with piano, and only three of them can enter the final with orchestra. Past winners include Francisco Flores, Clément Saunier, David Guerrier, Frédéric Mellardi and Andrea Dell’Ira.

First held in 1971, the competition was named after a business and cultural leader, Theo Tromp, and has taken place in Eindhoven, a city known as the City of Light with a lively cultural scene and located in the southern part of the Netherlands. It is organised every two years together with the festival. Since 2004, discipline rotates between string quartet and percussion. This year, the competition is dedicated to percussion. First prize winner will be offered concert engagements and CD recordings. Past winners include Yi-Ping Yang, Claire Edwardes and Niels Meliefste, just to name a few.

The Florence International Chamber Music Competition “Premio Vittorio Gui” was initially founded in 1977 and has been running for over 30 years. The competition is organized under the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic. Different chamber music categories are open to prospective chamber groups, including Violin and Piano Duo; Viola and Piano Duo; Violoncello and Piano Duo; String Trio and Quartet; Piano and String Trio, Quartet and Quintet; and Wind Quintet. Seven qualified musicians, including Piero Bellugi, Alfonso Ghedin and Natalia Gutman were invited to join the Jury for the competition.
