With a long history since its first reception in 1947 initiated by renowned Czech conductor and composer Rafael Kubelík, together with the Czech Philharmonic, the competition is internationally distinguished for its exceptionally high standards of musical aesthetics. Throughout history, the event has discovered a respectable number of great artists including Igor Bezrodny, Mstislav Rostropovich and Smetana Quartet. Taking place annually in Prague, two out of sixteen categories alternate in different combinations each year upon the decision of competition committee. Its refined quality is a promise from the jury panel consisting of world class music authorities, with big names such as David Oistrakh, Paul Tortelier, Jean-Pierre Rampal having been past juries. Laureates will be invited to perform on stage in the famous Prague Spring International Music Festival together with many more outstanding musicians.
The 2012 edition will focus on the cello and the harpsichord.

Named after the Polish composer Witold Lutoslawki, the competition aims to establish international connections between young cellists and cello professors through competitions. With an emphasis on a balanced musical talent, candidates are to interpret repertoires of a wide stylistic range, from works of early periods to that of contemporary times. Dedicated to promote young cellists, the competition is the first to place a strict age limit (24 or under) amongst all in Europe, adding on to its demanding feature. Candidates entering the final round are to perform Lutoslawki’s concerto works with Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra. Apart from the winners, awards will be assigned to the best performance of various repertoires. Atop all, the Grand Prix may be granted to the best interpreter of Lutoslawski’s concerto upon jury’s decision. Laureates of previous years include Philip Higham (2009), Marcin Zdunik (2007, Grand Prix winner), Kenji Nakagi (2005), Julian Steckel (2003), Bartosz Koziak (2001), Danjulo Ishizaka (1999), Anna Tyka (1997) and more.
